Rant: T.I.P.S
Over Halloweekend, I was down in southern california hanging out with my core group kids and playing Rock Band 2. The next night, there was a party at Pont's house and I was in the backyard with a few of my core group kids and I started talking about jobs and whatnot. Then somehow, someone mentioned tips and I put my two cents in as it were. But I didn't stop there, a casual conversation snowballed into a full blown rant. Now, here is basically that rant.
T.I.P.S. Most people don't even know what tips mean, most don't know that it actually stands for something. That is what I'm going to teach you now.
Let me drop some knowledge on you. T.I.P.S. stands for "To Insure Proper Service" In the good old days, a family, or a couple, would go out to a resturant and actually put the tip out on the table at the begining, so the server would know how much they were going to get right up front. Then as the evening progressed, if the service was sub-par, the money would get taken away little by little, until there was nothing. Yes, people actually didn't get tipped at all if they did a bad job! What a concept.
Now a days, if you don't tip a certain percentage, your basically a crook. Which is complete crap. Now, I'm not a penny pincher or a tightwad, but I do believe that if you do a great job you should get something a little extra, but I don't believe in tipping people when they are just doing their normal job and not doing anything out of the ordinary. No one should get tipped for doing what they are paid to do anyways. It's going above and beyond that is what should make you get tips.
Now this whole thing with people at starbucks having a tip jar is assinine... if I even DID drink coffee, I wouldn't tip someone for pulling a handle and making hot liquid fill a cup. That my friends is bullshit. Like Bart Simpson said to the dentist when she told him to brush and floss after every meal "Wait...you want me to do your job for you, at home, for free?" I can make a cup of coffee....it's not hard, believe me. I wouldn't dream of giving someone money for something so easy. I garentee you that I work harder than anyone of my other friends... AND I SIT AT HOME AND PLAY VIDEO GAMES ALL DAY!!! When I work, I hold company's information in my hands, all their tax records, bank account informaiton, contacts, clients...ect. but do I get a tip when I bring back data that is irreplacable?! NO!!! You know why? It's because I'm just doing my job. It's what I get paid to do already. Now, if I somehow did the same thing, but also built a backup server or something out of the kindness of my heart, then MAYBE I should deserve something extra...but this crap of "Oh, you just poured hot water over some beans into a cup...let me give you something for your trouble." is just insane.
I also don't apperciate when places already charge you what they want for tips... or what they call "gratuity" NO!!!! I will tell you how much more I want to give you! And I'll only give you what is fair. That is another thing that pisses me right off.
I don't mind tipping when I'm out with a lady. I have money, I don't need to hog it all. I believe "What good is money if you don't have anyone to spend it on" but this crap needs to stop. You should be able to walk into a place and if you get crappy service, you shouldn't have to pay at all...but that might be going a little extreame. At least you shouldn't have to pay a tip for crappy service.
Let me tell you about last year's Core Group Christmas Party On Our Own. It was Christmas time and Red Robin just opened up in Foothill Ranch. We all went down there and had a great time. Yet, we had some of the worst service ever. Honestly the waiter seemed put out ever time we asked for refills (which we only got one, because he only came around ever half hour or so) and our orders were wrong, and a bunch of other things. Long story short, he didn't get a tip and Brady went to the manager or someone and told him what horrible service we had.
Moral of the rant: Don't Tip unless they deserve it. That or only tip what is fair if you are with a lady (becuase that is all that women care about, money)
